Lovely spring day

Bear Creek ParkHappy April Fool’s everyone!

We went up to Bear Creek Park today for a little exercise, and so Pam could get some fresh air. They’ve put a large bear in one of the flower beds, and I am sure it will fill with flowers or colorful leaves soon. Pretty cute.

Bear Creek ParkIt was a beautiful warm spring day, with the scent of tons of flowers – especially the hyacinths – in the air. It was wonderful. This is a very well used park, with lots of walking paths though all the lovely flower beds.

Bear Creek ParkEach time we come, there are some new and amazing displays. The gardeners are kept busy the year round changing things up for our viewing pleasure!

Bear stranded!

Bear Creek ParkWe were out taking Max for a walk – in Bear Creek Park too – when we came across a terrible sight. We were walking along the salmon stream, which was quite high from the spring run off. Max suddenly barked, and ran back and forth across an open area by the stream.

Close-upWe thought he must be chasing a squirrel, but no, he’d actually cornered a bear! I think he must have been fishing for salmon, but the river was moving so fast, he seemed paralyzed with fear!

Now, we thought we should call Fish and Wildlife to let them know about this poor stranded animal, but our pleas for assistance fell on deaf ears.

I’ve posted this pic, and you be the judge about whether they should have sent help!

Nice fall day

SpiderIt’s hard to believe how quickly the time has slipped away. I guess all the visits to the doctor has made the days all run together. It’s almost time to start putting up some Halloween decorations! Bunny in Bear CreekHere’s a picture I took of a spider, using the macro mode with the Panasonic Lumix. He actually was a fairly good sized spider though!

We’ve been having some pretty nice weather lately, with some nice warm fall days. We went wandering around Bear Creak Park and we snapped this picture of Max posing with the topiary bears. Looking sharp eh?

We even saw a little bunny running around too. We had Max on a leash, or he would have been chasing him, that’s for sure!

Bear Creek Walk

Flowers in Bear CreekMax and I took a walk through Bear Creek today and it was really gorgeous. It’s so warm here, very unseasonable. It was so warm I had to take off my jacket and walked around in short sleeves.

SniffingThere are so many of these flowers blooming, but I’m not sure what they are. They are on a stem that looks sort of like a peony, but the flowers sort of look like balloon flowers. No idea what they might be, but they are blooming all over Bear Creek. Max was always stopping to smell them; not sure why that was, although he does like to smell flowers, these ones really seemed to attract him.

DucksWe went down by the salmon stream and it was covered in ducks. Max kept trying to get them, but they would quack at him and move off a little. He finally charged them, and they took off in a loud cacophony of honking and quacking! There was a young mother with a couple kids on a bridge, and the ducks came flying over them, and the kids just loved it! It was pretty funny stuff…

Daniel Igali and Right to Play

Daniel Igali and M On Saturday, Pam and I participated in the 1st Annual Run for the Kids, sponsored by Canadian Olympian Daniel Igali. The run was around Bear Creek Park, just a few minutes from home, so it was a great event for us. Unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative, with rain for most of the event.

The Right to Play component of the day is a cause that lots of people support, including the NHL. Basically it’s designed to give kids in under-developed countries an opportunity to play any sport. It’s good for the kids, good for the society, and good for the volunteers.

Olympic mascotsI ran the 5k and Pam walked it. I’m not one hundred per cent right now, but I was happy with my time. It’s kinda cool beating people half your age in a race. It’s funny how those young thin Asians are so out of shape lol. They look fit, but they can’t even run 500 metres without stopping. I was really proud of Pam. It was tough for her, but she didn’t quit.

It was a nice event, and we will surely be there next year. They had the Olympic mascots out and the kids really do get a kick out of the big puppets.

There was a nice band playing, and I will have to find out who they were, so we can go listen to them someplace. A fine Celtic band that played so many songs from my life… It was really emotional. Songs I knew the words to, even though I hadn’t heard them years. Really swell to sit there in the rain, listening to “Farewell to Nova Scotia” and “I’s the boy who builds the boats…”

It was a nice day, and I ‘m glad we went. Some excercise, some free food, a few prizes, some great music – and all for a good cause. What’s not to like?
