Sunday Shopping

Da plane! Da plane!Sunday is not normally a day to do shopping in the Caribbean, but we read that the Dutch side has most stores open until noonish. Since there were a couple of things we wanted to grab we loaded up the truck and headed to Philipsburg. Most of the shirts I like are by this company called Rima and there is an outlet store here on the island. Talk about a shoppers paradise! Who knew Rima made soooo many things?

At Blue Bitch Bar Virtually everything that is for sale in all the little shops on the island is stocked in the Rima store. From fridge magnets, to hats, scarfs, beach wraps, wind chimes, masks, sculptures, tin cars, geckos and shell jewelry, you will find it here.

But of course, I couldn’t find THE shirt that I am looking for, so we headed downtown (OVER two blocks away!) Because there were a couple of cruise ships in the harbor, everything was open. The Philipsburg boardwalk is tons of fun. People watching is top of the list. They rent Segways so you can boogie up and down the boardwalk in a hurry. It’s great fun to see cruisers in little yellow hardhats maneuvering in and out of the crowds!

Segway riderWe ate lunch in the Blue Bitch Bar – I kid you not… and it wasn’t called that because a couple of waitresses were having a disagreement! It’s simple lunch fare, but pretty tasty. We watched a woman get a massage, right on the beach. The masseuse worked her over pretty good, for a darn long time!

I managed to find four or five nice shirts, but still not the one I really want – so that will have to wait for another shopping trip.

Bluehead wrasseThe weather was really too windy for snorkeling so we decided to try St. Maarten’s answer to Aruba’s Baby Beach. It’s a nicely sheltered cove, with water that is very shallow for a considerable distance. Being a Sunday, it was packed with locals. We did manage to see a few unique sites, including a large puffer fish, and a couple of stingrays. We also saw our first barracuda here.

Absinthe adWe decided to try the Westin for dinner tonight, since we wanted to spend a few bucks in the casino. Naturally, if there is a casino on the island, Pam needs to try it out! Anyway, we tried the restaurant called “Aura”, billed as a “Fine Dining Establishment.” The restaurant itself is tucked away down a large marble hallway, with 16 foot ceilings. You enter the dining room by passing rows of wine bottles neatly arranged in a glass display case. There are large wooden beams suspended from the ceiling via wires, giving an aura of coziness, with a sense of expansiveness. The seats were nicely covered in a deep padded fabric. However, they dragged across the marble floors with a terrible screech. They need to get some padding under the legs of those chairs!

Some advice Pam and I ordered a “Shrimp and Lump Crabmeat Salad” ($14) to start and it was more than excellent. Six large prawns were accompanied by a generous portion of crab, served over a few lettuce leaves. It was served with a lemon wedge and a rather ordinary seafood cocktail sauce, much like you’d get from a bottle. The shrimps and crab were divine however. Succulent and flavorful, I’d order it again.

For the main, I had the Double Cut Pork Chop, with Oaxacan Mole ($42), asparagus with hollandaise sauce ($7) and Broccoli with almonds ($5). When dinner arrived, it was on 5 plates. That’s right, fine dining to the Westin is kinda like a buffet! The pork chop arrived sitting completely alone on the plate; the mole sauce (with no discernible chocolate in it) was in a small gravy boat, the asparagus was in its own tray, the broccoli on another, and the Hollandaise sauce was in a small square bowl. The Hollandaise was a rather congealed mass, not a luxurious sauce. The pork chop was very tasty indeed, although I prefer mine slightly more cooked. The mole sauce, while interesting, was not what I expect a mole sauce to be. I will need to consult with Jorge and Marlene, but I was under the impression that all seven mole sauces had chocolate in them! I realize I sound kinda bitchy, but it bothers me that my dinner alone was $62.10 dollars (a 15% “service charge” is added to the bill) before tip, to eat a meal I must plate myself. Let’s face it, part of the charm of fine dining is admiring the wonderful plating the CHEF DOES!

Guavaberry is a fruit unique to St. Maarten. Another gripe I have, is that when I dine in a Fine Dining Establishment, I do not expect dinner to arrive, and for the waiter to announce to the table that he has a pork chop, and who ordered it! In a fine dining establishment, the waiter is able to take an order from four individuals and then remember to whom to it should be delivered!

For dessert Pam and I split a rather meager two tablespoons (NOT scoops) of ice cream served with four ginger cookies. Not recommended. The coffee, while flavorful, was tepid, an unfortunate constant the island over.

Overall, I’d give the Westin Aura about a 4 out of 10. I simply can’t recommend a Fine Dining Establishment with such poor service, poor plating, and an enforced service charge.

Dinner for four, including tip was $400.

We had little success at the casino – although Maggie took a few bucks from them. The casino was not very busy, maybe 10 people – and we were able to play whatever we liked. We spent most of the time at the Zorro game, and got quite a few bonuses, but never enough to make us walk away a winner!

Halloween frights

Fright Night!

Well Halloween has come and gone. It was pretty special this year. We were worried about the weather, since it was very windy and rained all week, and the forecast was for more of the same. But the day started sunny and warm and kept that way all day. The evening came and it was clear and no wind. So that was very cool. It’s great when the kids can come out in their costumes without having to worry about rain gear.

Fiona and friend Mike and Fiona came out and helped with the festivities this year, too. Fiona got all done up in a witch’s outfit, and with Pam as a Ghoul, the kids had a double dose of fright! I tell you, Fiona had a great cackle, and the karaoke machine projected her voice – it was great!

Pam screams One lady told us that her daughter had been calling our house “the creepy house” all week and couldn’t wait to come and get some candy from us. But when she got to the house, and saw all the strobes flashing, the creepy red eyes gleaming, the smoke and the screaming, she couldn’t even look at Pam or Fiona! Her mother had to carry her down the driveway, but no way was she going to look! Pretty cute.

It was really nice to hear so many people thank us and compliment us. We have always done something around the place, but we really did do something different for this year. The graveyard theme was a big hit, and people loved walking through the headstones and reading all the goofy inscriptions. Next year I promise to do a better job of lighting the way!

Halloween 2009 We’ve also had some talk with the next door neighbours about doing a Haunted House or something like that. It’s an intriguing idea. We’ll have to take some time to consider how to do that. We watched a show called Extreme Halloween and one guy had a haunted house in his driveway. It was cool, but he figured he spends over $5000 a year on it! We ain’t going there!

I hope you enjoy the movies! It’s a little dark, but you get a sense of the place. You can hear them cackling and the scary music going!

Here is a shorter version of the mystery of the Great Pumpkin Head. Kids got to take a sucker from the Great Pumpkin Head, but if they took the wrong one, they got eaten! Apparently the younger ones are quite crunchy. If they picked the right one, Pam and Fiona begrudgingly gave them a bag of chips or nachos for it.

The day before…

October 30th Well it’s the day before Halloween. And we’ve pretty much got the yard completed now. A couple of my neighbours stopped by and had a big chuckle over some of the grave stone sayings. One that we added yesterday has the name “AL B. BACK” (say it with an Austrian Accent!) and then “Died” with four dates, with three crossed out, 1984, 1991, 2003 then 2009… (For the 4 Terminator movies!)

The ladies across the street brought their kids over and said it’s been so much fun to get up in the morning and wonder what else we’ve added today!

Halloween 2009It’s nice to hear that people like it. Cars have been stopping and kids have been getting out too… I tell them, wait til tomorrow and the music and fog and screaming will really add ambience! haha

We still have a few skeletons to put out, and a couple of ghouls. We’ve got a string or two of lights that go around the table we’ll put out for the candy dishes. We’ve also got a skeleton that is all in pieces – we’ve put it in a suitcase, and labelled it “Bone Voyage!”

Here is a quick movie of the yard at about 4 pm this afternoon.

Change through Fun

I don’t often make posts like this, but this is just too much fun. Here’s the setup: how do you get people to do what is good for them? You can try education, but that is often a slow process. Look at smoking – BC has only 15% of the population as smokers, but just 20 years ago, that number was over 60%… It’s been a tough go. Tough legislation to make cigarette companies responsible for their products, including forcing them to show you the consequences of using their products, have made gains.

Lately, they’ve forced smokers outside of all government buildings, enacting legislation to force smokers 20 meters from doors and entrances. They’ve even forced people in their cars to stop smoking when minor children are in the car. All well and good – for a good cause – your life!

But it takes years and years to get results with this type of approach.

Is there something that could cause change, but at a quicker rate? Is it possible to get people to do something that is good for them, like climbing stairs, even though an escalator is right beside the stairs?

Well, here is a video from YouTube that I think is absolutely hilarious! And the results are clearly instant!

The whole thing is called “The Fun Theory.” Check out their website, maybe you have an idea that can make you money!

Max has a long walk

Max n M When I got ready to go for a run on Saturday, who should come sit beside me? haha Max seems to eager to come for a run! We did take Max to the Watershed on Saturday, but not for a run! We had lots of comments about how people liked to see Max trucking about, so we did another short movie.

This one is on one of the lower trails. When the movie starts, we’re already about 4 or 5 minutes into the park, after descending a rather steep trail. We have him on a retractable lead, and just let him go at his own pace. Which ever trail he picked, we let him, except the ones I knew were too steep!

As you can see, Max is moving really well. He’s curious about things, and handled meeting other dogs really well. He had had a really long outing,  walked over 45 minutes! So he has stamina too. He even did some slow speed running today too – we just couldn’t hold him back!

We are having a really nice fall. The almanacs say we’re due for a mild winter. Not exactly what the Olympic organizers hoped for I imagine.

Anyway, got your popcorn ready? Enjoy the movie!

After the Watershed

Max in the watershed We took Max for a stroll in the Watershed Park. He perked up as we approached the park, which I kind of figured he would. We have a harness for strapping him into the car, and it worked like a charm to help support him. I just kept some tension on the harness and let him walk at his own pace.

As soon as we opened the door, he was up and eager to get out and go! We took him as far as he felt like. When he felt like turning around, I let him. It’s wasn’t a huge walk, but hey, he got out and saw that he could do it. So that’s all positive.

Pam took a movie, and I’ve stuck it on the end of this message. You can see that awkward foot, but we’re going to keep at it. I’m hopeful he’ll keep coming along.

Flamingos in Curacao

FlamingosThe other day a friend from work mentioned that her mother just loves flamingos, and I said, well, you just have to take her to Curacao and she can see them in the wild!

The shot to the left (click the thumbnail to get bigger pictures) was taken while coming back from Playa Kenepa. They were hanging around the marshy edges of the water, stepping gingerly through the water. They were there the next day as well, when we headed back to Porto Mari.

FlamingosWe stayed in the Royal Sea Aquarium while in Curacao, and they had a bunch of flamingos hanging around the restaurant, with a bunch of turtles. They were often noisy buggers, and had certain interactions that were um – unique – to say the least. Watch the movie to see what I mean.

Here is a movie of the flamingos in the Royal Sea Aquarium enclosure. We were having lunch in the restaurant when the flamingos got rather noisy, so this is what transpired.
