Getting around in a wheelchair

With Pam needing a wheelchair to get anywhere, it’s been interesting to see how people react, how easy it is to get places, and how people treat you in general.

For the most part, people have been pretty good with treating us as people. I hate to say it, but it’s been along racial lines that people ignore you. Here in Surrey there is a very large East Indian population, and they have been amazing. Opening doors, smiling, chatting – even more so than when we weren’t in the chair! I’ve really been pleased with the reception, it’s been wonderful and heartwarming. The Chinese, on the other hand, have been rude, abusive, and pushy. They’ve never once held a door open, they’ve virtually ignored us, and they’ve run to cut us off, failed to move even an inch so we could get by, and even pushed to get on a small elevator first. It’s a real tragedy over the way they’ve treated us. At the local T&T, a mostly Chinese store, the staff has been good, but the customers even pushed by us to get ahead in the checkout line!

On the other hand, every restaurant we’ve been to has been amazing. They’ve rushed to open the doors, helped us find a table, moved chairs, and basically done everything possible for us. Patrons in our local pub, Brewster’s, have been really terrific. They have literally RUN to hold open the door, cleared a path for us, and treated us with amazing respect.

Most stores have been quite accessible. Well signed elevators, wide aisles, and respectful staff. In no way could you say that we’ve been overlooked, or mistreated. Kudos to all of them. With ONE exception! The Bay in Guildford Mall was abysmal. The store itself is huge, with tons of open areas, but it was impossible to get around any of the aisles containing products! We wanted to look at shower curtains, but could not. The aisles were far too small for a wheelchair to get down.

As for parking, it’s been generally very good. However, there have been a number of times when we’ve seen people in the handicapped spots, who were clearly not impaired in anyway. One young girl cut us off to get into the spot, then got out and ran into the store, and I mean RAN. We found a spot farther away and struggled to get Pam into the chair in the narrow parking stalls. I used to be kind of ambivalent about the handicapped spots, but having to get around with the chair has really given me an appreciation for their effectiveness, and their real need. We have a handicapped parking pass but I’ve made sure I avoided the handicapped spots when Pam was not with me.

Overall, I’d have to say it’s been a pretty good experience most times we’ve been out.

I am Canadian

Pam's got gearA lot of the time, we Canadians tend to be rather reserved in our nationalistic pride, but us Vancouverites showed with the Vancouver Olympics it’s ok to be Canadian, proud of it, and it’s actually cool to be willing to show it!

I’ve always loved these Molson commercials, so I’ve decided to put a couple up. I know, I know, it’s a commercial, but they do capture our spirit! Now this one has a cool driving musical score, that sort of impels you forward. But I really love those shots of the dudes just motoring across the lake!

Here is another cool one! Can’t beat the Ramones and Canada!!

Anyway – back to our regularly scheduled blog!

GO CANUCKS GO!

Canucks WIN Western Conference Final game! :)

Wow, we are going to the Stanley Cup finals ! 🙂 Maurice and I and our friend Mike have been following the canucks for more than a couple decades, and we always get together to watch the games. Like the rest of the Canuck fans, we have been long suffering and we DESERVE this chance at the cup. What an awesome team we have this year. I have really loved some past  canucks players for their hearts and guts (Trevor Linden, and Martin Gelinas come to mind quickly) but there is a long list of canucks who have found their way into our hearts. A a fan, and a Canadian,  I love the sport and I love our team.GO CANUCKS GO!!   WE ARE ALLLLLL CANUCKS!!!

This team, this group, from the start, has had a magical feel to it. It’s felt from the beginning that this was our year. I have believed it, and am not one of these fans that falls off the band wagon if they lose or have a bad game. Instead, I feel we need to support our team. I think Kesler and Bieksa are both awesome players who give us 100% efforts. The Sedins are both a marvel and their talents so many that we see new nifty moves all of the time. Every player on this team has given us a great effort so far. They have put it all out there and battled. They deserve more credit than they get. So does Luongo, he’s played so well, and he stole this game 5 for us, standing on his head.

The referee’s however, seem to have all been given a set of  Mr Magoo coke bottle glasses. Many times we screamed our outrage because the ref’s would not call a penalty against the opposing team, when we were clearly tripped, slashed or hooked..  yet, the other teams seemed to get away with so much, and we were called on penalties that were seemingly phantom calls. The first 4 games of the Sharks series, I believe the players were even confused as to what is and what isn’t a penalty. Torres for charging?? I don’t think so…  he took 1.5 strides.. NOT a charge. I’d be angry too Torres.

What about at the end of the game when Kesler gets sucker punched in the face by Clowe?  To me, that should have 2 minute penalty to start the next game. Why should he be able to get away with that kind of mugging?

It is awesome to see everyone supporting the canucks and I hope the fans keep it together and keep it safe. 🙂

We are SO excited, not just because it’s our team, but it’s the only Canadian Team in the playoffs so the Canucks will try to represent,  and will be watching the games and cheering from our familyroom!

While I’m posting, I’ll take a sec to do a hockey rant. Why should the east be able to dictate when our games are held?  a noon game on a sunday? What??  We finally get a sunny day, but can be gardening? NO.. there is a game on, so of course we are going to be watching it…   Noon?  Really?  come on….  why should WE be the only ones inconvenienced.

…Pam…

Thomas Covenant

I’m a big fan of the books by Stephen Donaldson in the Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever series. He wrote an original trilogy, then a second trilogy. Now he is completing the work with a quartet of books. The second trilogy was on the New York Best Seller list for a long time, over a year I believe.

Thomas Covenant is the quintessential anti-hero. Most books in the genre feature warriors determined to overcome great odds, heroically battling against ridiculous odds, and of course, prevailing. Covenant is named the Unbeliever because he refuses to believe he can be of consequence in these huge battles.

He has leprosy, so his health plays a large role in how he combats things. He has already lost a couple fingers on his hand due to his disease. so he must be wary of everything, since it could wind up costing him a limb. Unable to feel in his extremities, any injury could lead to putrefaction, and more amputations.

The Land, where he is transported to, is peopled by amazing characters, races and creatures. Bannor and Lord Mhoran in the early books help him, and their humanity is remarkable. It’s a great series of books, and I have enjoyed them very much. Both Pam and I have read them several times. My first edition of the first novel has been read so many times, that virtually none of the pages remain attached to the cover!

Anyway – the third novel of the final quartet was released a while back, and I was looking for it on the internet. I found a professor’s website where he was offering the book to some lucky person who sent an email. And he chose me! How lucky can you get?

All Donaldson’s books require a commitment from the reader, since they are generally over 500 pages, and always contain words that you don’t normally see in everyday life. It’s just a terrific way to spend a few days. I started the book, and basically didn’t put it down until I was finished.

Megan McNeil

Megan McNeilI don’t know if any of you have heard of Megan, but she was a young lady from North Delta, just a few blocks from where we live. She was diagnosed with cancer at 16. She went public with her battle and wrote a song called Will to Survive. When music producer Garth Richardson (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, Motley Crue) heard the song, he immediately wanted to be involved.

Megan McNeilIt’s a touching song, about struggling with childhood cancer. Megan donated all the proceeds of the song, available on Itunes, to a couple of agencies doing research into childhood cancer. I was not aware that much of what is done for adult cancer, doesn’t really apply to childhood cancer.

Megan’s website points out that twenty years ago, only twenty percent of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Now that’s up to eighty percent! She thinks that if Terry Fox were diagnosed today, not only would he be alive, but he probably wouldn’t even have lost his leg!

Sadly, Megan lost her battle with cancer on Friday, at the age of twenty. RIP sweet child. I hope you’re in a better place, because you made this world a better place!

Her website, The Will to Survive, contains her blog, the agencies she helped and other information. Maybe you can help, too.

Something different

The sand ladySometimes you see something, and it’s not easy to explain how or why you are drawn to it. This video is one of those things. The simple explanation is that it is part of a television genre called “(Some Country) Has Talent.” I’m sure you’ve all seen them – Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent — they are everywhere. Well this is from Ukraine’s Got Talent.

This is like nothing I’ve ever seen. The young lady, Kseniya Simonova, draws with her hands, using sand. But she doesn’t create one piece. She morphs her creation, from sitting on a park bench, to portraits, to a kind of Guenica, to Mother Theresa, to Christmas – to whatever you see actually.

I wish I knew what she wrote at the end, but I assume it is in Ukrainian, or whatever her native tongue is… I know the video is eight minutes, but trust me, it’s worth spending those few minutes to see what she does. Can you imagine this happening on US or Canadian television? I doubt it.

I hope you enjoy it.

Where the hell is Matt?

MattI was wandering about YouTube the other day (something that Canadians apparently do far too much) and I stumbled across this guy named Matt.

Matt is a self-admitted bad dancer. And he’s danced all over the world, in all sorts of interesting and fascinating places. He’s made a career out of it, in fact! He’s an American, who was working in Brisbane, Australia, when he decided to quit his job and wander around South Asia.

He got himself a website, www.wherethehellismatt.com so his family could follow his adventures. One day a friend convinced him to do his bad dance at a tourist stop, and well, the rest is history. Read his FAQ page. I just loved it. I just love his philosophy of life, and especially on the value of travel. He seems like a great guy.

He’s got quite a few videos up on YouTube and this is the first one. I love the music, the spirit, the simple enjoyment of being alive and being able to enjoy the world. I hope you do too.
