At the hockey game

Bo knows faceoffsPam and I went to the Vancouver Canucks – Nashville Predators hockey game on Saturday night. One of her work buddies has season’s tickets and couldn’t go so off we went to Roger’s Arena. It’s been a while since we’ve been to a game so it was fun to be there.

The Canucks won 4-2, which was good. Our seats were quite high, behind the Preds goal for the first and third periods. The Canucks played very well the first period outshooting the Preds 14-4 , so lots of the action was in our end of the rink.

Henrik and Nikita TryamkinWe thought we might see the new Russian Tank, the basketball player sized defenceman Nikita Tryamkin. He took the pre-game skate, got some advice from Henrik Sedin, and didn’t play! Rats.

First time seeing Jake Virtanen play live was impressive. He looked pretty good, a little wild still, and sometimes seemed not quite lost, but needs to find out where he is on the ice sometimes. I don’t think he’s really comfortable out there all the time, quite yet, but you really notice him out there. He certainly looks like the real deal.

Alex BurrowsThe beer was 8 bucks or 8.75 for premium, quite normal for beer in a bar-type setting and I wasn’t outraged, just resigned. I also wanted a hot dog, $5.75 which I figured was reasonable. I ordered “A hot dog and a beer please.”

The hot dog arrives and I get my beer and she says “That will be 21 bucks.” I ain’t the best dude at math, but that seemed a tad out of whack, so I said “uh that’s a pack of taxes on that 15 buck bill eh?” She said, “oh no I gave you the double, saves you money!”

First off, I didn’t order a double, second off, it’s not even on the menu, ok? What scam is this? My other complaint about the place was how many people are drunk! I don’t mean fun to be around good times dudes, who have had a couple, but flat out, barely able to stand, bright red-nosed, drunk. And no wonder. Young guys are thinking they are getting one beer, pounding back 4 or 5 and actually having consumed 8 or 10. Who functions well with 10 beers in them?

Pam's viewLast little complaint – I’m sure this is associated with the over serving of alcohol – the three young men behind us, used the f-word every third or fourth word, sprinkled liberally with the c-word, and then they’d throw in the odd n-word for good effect. Seated beside me was a young family, three young girls, and a boy 5 to 11ish – all dressed in Canuck hats and stuff. I turned to the dudes and said,  “c’mon eh, young kids don’t need to hear that constantly.” Two guys apologized, and one said, “f-off, it’s a hockey game.” sigh

Farewell Hockey Night In Canada

Farewell HNICWith the recent purchase of the rights to air all hockey games in Canada, Rogers has altered the landscape of how we will view hockey for the next twelve years. Tim Thompson has been creating the opening montages for Hockey Night In Canada on the CBC for years, but on Saturday, he served up a timeless classic.

Whether or not you are a fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs really doesn’t matter. It’s all about hockey, the fans, and atmosphere that surrounds the game when two great rivals meet. The final shot of the two young fellows arm in arm with a fist, cocked ready to go, is so quintessentially Canadian, so gut-wrenchingly expressive of how it is to be a youngster in Canada, that I doubt you could come up with a better shot that symbolizes Canada, hockey and the Two Solitudes.

I am Canadian

Pam's got gearA lot of the time, we Canadians tend to be rather reserved in our nationalistic pride, but us Vancouverites showed with the Vancouver Olympics it’s ok to be Canadian, proud of it, and it’s actually cool to be willing to show it!

I’ve always loved these Molson commercials, so I’ve decided to put a couple up. I know, I know, it’s a commercial, but they do capture our spirit! Now this one has a cool driving musical score, that sort of impels you forward. But I really love those shots of the dudes just motoring across the lake!

Here is another cool one! Can’t beat the Ramones and Canada!!

Anyway – back to our regularly scheduled blog!

GO CANUCKS GO!

We are the Champions of the World!

Gold Medal CrowdWell what a game! And what an aftermath! It was an amazing experience to be able to be surrounded by about a quarter of a million Canadians in downtown Vancouver yesterday. I can’t even begin to describe what it felt like, but if you are a Canadian, I don’t even have to try to explain it – you just know!

Gold Medal MikeSo what that we set a record for any host nation, and even, So what that we set a record for ANY nation!? The ONLY Gold Medal that mattered was the hockey gold. If we had got silver, this would not have been a successful Games. Period. Canada would be in depression.

But we won the coveted Hockey Gold medal and all is right with the world!!! It was scary and crazy, and watching the USA tie it with 25 seconds left put an incredible celebration on hold for a few minutes kind of making it even sweeter really. Kudos to the Americans for not quitting! The game was played at a level all we hockey fans can be proud of – hard fought, and clean. Both teams can be proud of how they played.

Gold Medal Crowd

I’ve separated my shoulder from high-fiving half of Vancouver!!! My voice doesn’t really work today, but you know what? That’s ok!!USA flag

It was an ecstatic and classy crowd! So much joy, so much pride. I’ve never experienced anything even close to that. I remember after game 6 of the Rangers-Canucks series, the downtown core was packed with people, but it was a “group” compared to this crowd! We got to Granville and Robson and the place was so packed, we could barely move. It was amazing.Gold Medal Crowd

Everywhere you turned, people were cheering, crying, smiling, dancing, celebrating. Well done Canada. Well done all you people who come downtown and were so well behaved – what else would you expect in Canada, eh?

Here are a couple of videos we took downtown.

Laser pointer at a hockey game

Canucks LogoDuring the Vancouver Canucks – Calgary Flames hockey game on Saturday night, someone in the audience pointed a laser pointer at the eyes of Calgary Flames goalie, Mikka Kiprusoff. It was clearly visible, and the CBC cameras had a perfect view of the culprit. Yet, “security” at the rink was unable to capture the individual, despite the fact he did it all game long.

Color me shocked! This behaviour is more than just outrageous, and incredibly bad sportsmanship. This is criminal behaviour! This is assault with a weapon, assault with intent to injure! It is completely unconscionable.

Laser pointed at Mikka Kiprusoff, January 9 2010If you were to shine a laser pointer at an airplane, you could be charged with terrorism! Yet some players on the Canucks laughed it off! Ryan Kesler in particular was quoted as saying “good for our fans — they want to win as bad as we do.” That is almost as shocking as the goof who shone the laser. At least we understand why athletes take steroids! If they are willing to accept blinding the opposition as “doing what it takes to win,” then steroids are easily condoned.

Alex Burrows had it right when he said that it was “funny that they couldn’t find out who did it and security has to do a better job” since the integrity of the game was at stake. NOW that I can agree with!

Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo said, “the fan should be ejected.” Even banned. That too is a sentiment I can go along with. Flames coach Sutter couldn’t believe that security was unable to pinpoint who did it, especially when you consider the CBC had such a good camera view of the point of origin.

If this “fan” had damaged Kiprusoff’s eyes, causing him to have to abandon his career, the personal injury lawsuit would be in the $50 million range, merely to compensate Kipper for loss of income. (He’s a $6.5 million a year player on his current contract.) And that doesn’t even take into consideration the loss of enjoyment of life, pain, suffering etc…

I’m ashamed that GM Place, and by extension, the Canucks management has been unable to put a name to this moron. He needs to be found. He needs to be charged with assault with a weapon, at the very least. He needs to be banned from future GM Place events, and sporting events in general.

And they need to apologize to the Calgary Flames.

And it wouldn’t hurt to have a chat with the Canuck players about what constitutes good sportsmanship.

Happy Birthday Maurice!

Maurice SkatingWell it is that time of the year again and Maurice will be celebrating his birthday today. This year we are going to be going to the Vault restaurant in Cloverdale and we are meeting two dear friends Maggie and Tim. We will come back here and gab about an upcoming holiday we will all be going on, and watch some hockey. Sounds like a good day to me. 🙂

This is a picture of my hockey player when he was 9 years old, isn’t he sweet?

Happy Birthday Sweetie!

Hockey Max

Max, September 2008Well Max seems to be a hockey fan – what else would you expect from a Canadian dog? He’s a little nervous around Mike yet, but then, Mike makes me nervous! hah

Here is a picture I took of him around 7:30 tonight – he never stays very long on the beds… maybe too soft after the SPCA kennel? He stays 5 minutes, then gets off and lays down on the carpet.

He’s quite a bit smaller than Buck. I’d say he weighs in the 50 pound range. Buck in his prime was 75ish. Max is a couple inches shorter, and not so thick through the chest, but he has as big a head lol.
