Restaurant Review: Kome

Kome is the Papiamentu word for “Eat.” It’s a restaurant that was conceived by a couple of ex-pats to serve tasty food, as locally sourced as possible. The food is fresh as fresh can be! The staff is beyond wonderful. The heritage building has been tastefully remodeled into a welcoming airy space.

They have lots of beer choices, probably the largest beer menu on the island. There was a choice of a couple of types of sangria as well: We tried the watermelon sangria. It was an interesting choice, but I switched to beer after one glass!  I enjoyed the sangria, but, well, beer is more my style.

The food: we went on my birthday with a couple of friends for the Wednesday tapas menu. It’s a wide ranging menu, with seafood, beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian dishes. They suggested we order two or three dishes each, and they would bring two or three at time, so the table wouldn’t become overloaded. I would suggest that two would be enough for most women, and three for men. We ordered lots of different dishes and shared them between us, as they came.

We chose dishes like chicken and waffles, wild mushrooms on toast, green beans in a sriracha sauce, buffalo chicken sliders, pulled pork tacos, crab Rangoon, blackened fish tacos, flatiron steak, hoisin ribs and more! We did order too much. I liked everything we ordered, with a special shout out to the green beans and the fish tacos. Pam really loved the ribs. The buffalo chicken sliders were especially spicy, and I loved them too. The only dish I would not order again was the crab rangoon. It was a generous serving, but I just didn’t “Love” them as much as everything else.

I would have no trouble eating again any of the dishes we ordered. Just a great sampling of food. Each was wonderfully presented, cooked very very well, and delivered in a great way. We ate and ate and dishes kept arriving, and it was really a wonderful dinner. The company was amazing, and the night just flew by! Couldn’t have had a better time.

The staff are really a special collection of people. They are truly motivated to give you an experience that is virtually unparalleled on Curacao. It ranks with the best service I’ve ever had, anywhere in the world. The only problem is that this level of service will spoil you for so many other restaurants on Curacao!

Rank: 10/10 There is nothing this restaurant can do to improve.

Birthday in Aruba

Damsel fishWell, today I turned 55, so I guess I’m officially old. But on the bright side, I do get some discounts now! We swam at Baby Beach, and it was awesome. The water was super clear, and the wave action was minimal, and we really got to see a lot. It was a great swim. We spent a great deal of time on the north end of the cove, where most people do NOT go… It’s got amazing coral formations, and just tons of fish. It’s really a different take on Baby Beach. Most times we have been there, we’ve focused on the channel, and it’s huge current and large coral formations. But this other end of the bay, is really cool.

Snook We got back to the time share about three, had a quick bite to eat, then Mike and I headed over to Malmok for a quick look-see. The visibility was just awesome here too. Saw a couple of new fish, and a couple of old favorites – including a rather large green moray eel.

Yellowtail snapperWe had dinner at El Gaucho’s, an Argentine steak place. We come here most times we are in Aruba. They really know how to cook a steak! Pam had made reservations, and told them that it was my birthday. When they took us to our table, there were a couple of balloons floating on the table!

Baby beach El Gaucho’s is how a steak joint should be! I started with an appetizer of Argentine soup, a beefy vegetable soup in a spicy broth, and it was really delicious. I had the 12 oz tenderloin (you can order a 16 oz, or a 22 oz if you like…) and while I like my steak medium-well done, this steak was done to perfection, juicy and amazing. They serve it with your choice of three side dishes. The have a roving guitar duo, and they stopped at our table, played Happy Birthday, then asked us if we wanted something sung for us – so Mike got them to do Guantanamera.

Grey grouperWhen desert came, a white and dark chocolate mousse cake, they had put a candle in it, and the duo came back for one more chorus of Happy Birthday! Pretty swell day, all in all!

My Dad's 80th Birthday

Karen and DadWe drove to Calgary to be with my Dad for his 80th birthday celebration. We took two days to get there, and it was a nice easy drive. The roads were good, and traffic was light.

The cakeKaren had arranged a great get together for the family and close friends at the Calgary Winter Club. It was held in a great room with a terrific view of the downtown Calgary skyline. We started with a couple drinks, milling about and chatting. It was good to see the family after such a long absence.

Dinner was a great three course meal, served by professional staff. David emceed the ceremonies, and everything went smoothly. Loreen had a terrific cake made with a picture of Dad as a young man, looking sharp! A very fitting end to the day!

It was a nice time, and I’m really glad we managed to get home for it.

Congrats Dad!

Happy Birthday Maurice!

Maurice SkatingWell it is that time of the year again and Maurice will be celebrating his birthday today. This year we are going to be going to the Vault restaurant in Cloverdale and we are meeting two dear friends Maggie and Tim. We will come back here and gab about an upcoming holiday we will all be going on, and watch some hockey. Sounds like a good day to me. 🙂

This is a picture of my hockey player when he was 9 years old, isn’t he sweet?

Happy Birthday Sweetie!
