Canucks WIN Western Conference Final game! :)

Wow, we are going to the Stanley Cup finals ! 🙂 Maurice and I and our friend Mike have been following the canucks for more than a couple decades, and we always get together to watch the games. Like the rest of the Canuck fans, we have been long suffering and we DESERVE this chance at the cup. What an awesome team we have this year. I have really loved some past  canucks players for their hearts and guts (Trevor Linden, and Martin Gelinas come to mind quickly) but there is a long list of canucks who have found their way into our hearts. A a fan, and a Canadian,  I love the sport and I love our team.GO CANUCKS GO!!   WE ARE ALLLLLL CANUCKS!!!

This team, this group, from the start, has had a magical feel to it. It’s felt from the beginning that this was our year. I have believed it, and am not one of these fans that falls off the band wagon if they lose or have a bad game. Instead, I feel we need to support our team. I think Kesler and Bieksa are both awesome players who give us 100% efforts. The Sedins are both a marvel and their talents so many that we see new nifty moves all of the time. Every player on this team has given us a great effort so far. They have put it all out there and battled. They deserve more credit than they get. So does Luongo, he’s played so well, and he stole this game 5 for us, standing on his head.

The referee’s however, seem to have all been given a set of  Mr Magoo coke bottle glasses. Many times we screamed our outrage because the ref’s would not call a penalty against the opposing team, when we were clearly tripped, slashed or hooked..  yet, the other teams seemed to get away with so much, and we were called on penalties that were seemingly phantom calls. The first 4 games of the Sharks series, I believe the players were even confused as to what is and what isn’t a penalty. Torres for charging?? I don’t think so…  he took 1.5 strides.. NOT a charge. I’d be angry too Torres.

What about at the end of the game when Kesler gets sucker punched in the face by Clowe?  To me, that should have 2 minute penalty to start the next game. Why should he be able to get away with that kind of mugging?

It is awesome to see everyone supporting the canucks and I hope the fans keep it together and keep it safe. 🙂

We are SO excited, not just because it’s our team, but it’s the only Canadian Team in the playoffs so the Canucks will try to represent,  and will be watching the games and cheering from our familyroom!

While I’m posting, I’ll take a sec to do a hockey rant. Why should the east be able to dictate when our games are held?  a noon game on a sunday? What??  We finally get a sunny day, but can be gardening? NO.. there is a game on, so of course we are going to be watching it…   Noon?  Really?  come on….  why should WE be the only ones inconvenienced.

Laser pointer at a hockey game

Canucks LogoDuring the Vancouver Canucks – Calgary Flames hockey game on Saturday night, someone in the audience pointed a laser pointer at the eyes of Calgary Flames goalie, Mikka Kiprusoff. It was clearly visible, and the CBC cameras had a perfect view of the culprit. Yet, “security” at the rink was unable to capture the individual, despite the fact he did it all game long.

Color me shocked! This behaviour is more than just outrageous, and incredibly bad sportsmanship. This is criminal behaviour! This is assault with a weapon, assault with intent to injure! It is completely unconscionable.

Laser pointed at Mikka Kiprusoff, January 9 2010If you were to shine a laser pointer at an airplane, you could be charged with terrorism! Yet some players on the Canucks laughed it off! Ryan Kesler in particular was quoted as saying “good for our fans — they want to win as bad as we do.” That is almost as shocking as the goof who shone the laser. At least we understand why athletes take steroids! If they are willing to accept blinding the opposition as “doing what it takes to win,” then steroids are easily condoned.

Alex Burrows had it right when he said that it was “funny that they couldn’t find out who did it and security has to do a better job” since the integrity of the game was at stake. NOW that I can agree with!

Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo said, “the fan should be ejected.” Even banned. That too is a sentiment I can go along with. Flames coach Sutter couldn’t believe that security was unable to pinpoint who did it, especially when you consider the CBC had such a good camera view of the point of origin.

If this “fan” had damaged Kiprusoff’s eyes, causing him to have to abandon his career, the personal injury lawsuit would be in the $50 million range, merely to compensate Kipper for loss of income. (He’s a $6.5 million a year player on his current contract.) And that doesn’t even take into consideration the loss of enjoyment of life, pain, suffering etc…

I’m ashamed that GM Place, and by extension, the Canucks management has been unable to put a name to this moron. He needs to be found. He needs to be charged with assault with a weapon, at the very least. He needs to be banned from future GM Place events, and sporting events in general.

And they need to apologize to the Calgary Flames.

And it wouldn’t hurt to have a chat with the Canuck players about what constitutes good sportsmanship.

Rambling…

Neely jersey Pam and I went to the Canucks game against the Detroit Red Wings last night. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Wings – an Original Six team, with lots of heart and character. Their jerseys are classic, simple and meaningful. Something the Canuck jerseys have NEVER been, despite dozens of re-designs.

Anyway – we had seats in the absolute LAST row of the house. We were three rows ABOVE the nosebleed seats! haha Still, it was fun to be at the game, even though the Canucks never showed up. My buddy Mike and I have complained about the lack of team toughness for years. And this team is once again a bunch of weak sisters. To be run out of the building by a team like Detroit is really disappointing.

The hardest working guyAlex Burrows is so lame this year. And Kesler looks lost. It’s time the coach realized that those two guys need each other to play well. Neither Burrows nor Kesler threw a check, which is something we have come to expect from them. But No Longer…  Thomas Holmstrom stands in front of the net, directly in front of Luongo and is unmolested. In the Detroit end, not a soul could even find the front of the net, let alone stand in front of either goalie the Wings used.

I’ve put a picture up of the hardest working guy on the ice last night… (The Zamboni driver, in case you missed my reference…)

Just a note about the vandalism of our Halloween display – the single grave marker that was removed from our yard has come back. In four pieces! I found it at the front of the property – I guess someone drove by and threw it back on the yard.

I appreciate you returning it, scumbag. I’ve smoothed over the ragged edges, re-touched the paint, and it is again featured on the yard. I’ve been working quite a bit on the display and it’s really getting cool.

Kinda morbid eh?I’ve been searching the net for funny grave sayings, and I’ve used the always familiar “I told you I was sick” already. But the one that caught my eye was “Bill Blake – Hanged my mistake” which I changed to “Billy Blake – Aged 5 – Hanged by Mistake!” haha

Funny story – one of my neighbours across the street, saw me out taking a picture last week, way before I had even put half our stuff out. He says to me, “wow, buddy, you must be finished now eh? That’s a lot of stuff you have there.” I said to him, “You new to the neighbourhood?” haha He gave me a funny look and walked into his house. Wait til he sees the smoke machine, the skeletons, the music, the karaoke machine, the strobes…

And when I start putting out the Christmas stuff… man – he’s in for a shock!

Max Update – He’s doing great. His left front paw is slightly weak, but he’s figured out how to do most everything without it working perfectly. He’s in better spirits lately, and much more playful.

We’ve been going on walks, instead of running for now. He wants to run, but the doctor advised against it, since the steroids can cause some swelling.

Trevor Linden: All Heart

Trevor Linden, Dec. 04, 08When Trevor Linden retired, it was a no brainer that there would be some kind of tribute to him. He really was the kind of man we all wanted to be… Not just the way he played the game, with pride and integrity – you never got cheap shots from Linden – but the way he was in the community.  And in “real” life, he gives his time to Canuck Place, a hospice for dying children.

Trevor LindenThere was something special about watching him play. You knew he gave you everything he had. He didn’t have to face the media and say, “gee I guess I didn’t come to play tonight” as we heard so many times from Markus Naslund last year.

That ’94 run was magical, and yes, I’m aware it says something about the state of the Canuck’s franchise when a run to the finals twenty years ago is as good as it gets. Linden was tireless and resolute. In today’s NHL, Messier might have been suspended for the crosscheck to Linden’s face at the end of game 6.

Geoff CourtnallDuring the retirement ceremony lots of the ’94 team members were in attendance, including Pam’s favorite Martin Gelinas, Geoff Courtnall, Kirk McLean, Gino Odjick, Harold Snepsts and others. After the ceremonies were over, the uniforms the players wore went to an online auction site to be sold to benefit the Kid’s Hospital. Well, I won the Courtnall uniform! That’s right – that uniform you see Courtnall wearing in that picture is now hanging in our TV room!

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

Just been having a gas with Sports Action. I’ve been putting down a bunch of 2 buck bets over the last little while, and while I haven’t hit, I’ve got 4 of 5 right 3 times. So now I’ve learned about this Combo playing, we’re going to give it a whirl on tomorrow’s slate of games.

Saturday and Sunday are fun to play because you can have morning, afternoon and evening tickets – 6 bucks total bet. If you take a few ties, you can hit for 7, 800 bucks. Too funny.

I have no idea how the combos work, but every combo costs you a bet, so hopefully I’ll do a 4 of 5 and get some combo pays.

This is a government lotto; we get the tickets at our local 649/Super 7 dealer. For two bucks, it’s fun to see who can win some bragging rights!

Here is a link to the BCLC site for sports action. Take 3 ties and watch the payoff on a 2 buck bet! Hilarious.

Sports Action Victory!

Well here we are expecting more snow! How can that be?

Oh woe is us….

Last night we watched the Canucks plaster the Hawks, jumping out to a 6-0 lead… but what was particularly sweet was that Mike had a Sports Action ticket and the Canucks victory was his third correct guess and he picked up a cool 265 bucks.

Max protecting his toy!My ticket was worthless, but I coulda won 800 bucks… Pam was too afraid to play – she talked a big game, but didn’t want to back it up with cash! (Ah…… quite rightly as it turns out LOL)

I’d be ahead 20 bucks if i hadn’t bought mine!

Anyway – here is a picture of Max protecting his toy, just like Mike was protecting his ticket!
