Bailey's home…

Bailey First a bit of news – we have decided to change Jenny’s name to Bailey. Neither of us thought that Jenny was much of a dog’s name, so we wanted to change it. It turns out that LAPS had simply named her that, it was not the name she has had all her life, so we figured, what the heck? She’s going to be coming into a new situation, so may as well start her with a new name too.

We’ve also renamed the blog, from All about Max to My Dog’s Blog… Not sure I’m entirely comfortable with that, but All about Max didn’t make much sense.

So, anyway, Saturday we picked up Bailey and brought her home with us. LAPS gave us a big bag of food, a huge metal water bowl (so big it holds a GALLON of water!), and some medicine she needs to take. She’s had surgery to ensure she is spayed, so we also got a cone for her head, which she needs to wear when we can’t supervise her.

Once in the house, she sniffed around quite intently at all the places Max used to hang out, but didn’t feel the need to mark her territory, which is a good sign. She ran around checking out the whole house, but waited to go upstairs until we went up there.

Bailey sleepingShe loved the backyard and gave it a good sniff and run. We played some ball with her, and gave her a toy that is quite hilarious. It’s a rubber pig in a football uniform and squeaks. She loved it. Kept tromping on it with her paw to hear it squeak. She’s been carrying it with her since!

After dinner, we went for a nice long walk around the neighbourhood. She got quite a bit of attention from people, but she took the praise like a champ, and didn’t get a big head about it. So, a good start to things.

Happy (belated) New Year!

The final sunsetAfter a difficult three-stage series of flights home from Aruba, we arrived in Seattle to no snow! I think this is the first time in six trips that we’ve done that. Seems every year, we’d take a trip around Christmas, and come home to snow. Not so this year. We grabbed the car, crossed the border and picked up Max, the wonder dog. Usually he’s a bit annoyed with us, and gives a good barking to, to let us know. This year, he was pretty eager to see us, and gave us only a bark or two of greeting while the gate was closed, and then came running over. It was a nice reunion.

Christmas was quiet, as Pam worked the 24th, 25th, and 26th. While there, she picked up the new strain of flu going around, that the head of the BC Centre for Disease Control says makes “You feel like you’ve been hit by a truck.” And trust me, she is not kidding. A couple days after Pam picked it up, I got nailed, and we’ve been struggling to just sit up since!

For basically a week, we struggled to do anything other than lay down and sleep, getting up to be sick, or let Max out. Today is the first day I’ve been able to actually sit up for longer than twenty minutes without getting dizzy and nauseous. Another couple of days, and we should be back to normal, whatever that might be for us!

Hope you all are having a healthier start to the New Year! Best wishes to you all!

(I’ve got a couple other things to post about our trip to Aruba, so hopefully I’ll get to them sooner, rather than later.)

Final notes

Max in the MorningWell we’re home. It took a little time but we’re home! The flight home was remarkable. We flew Continental from Aruba to Houston. And they served a meal! A hot meal! It’s been years and years and years since we’ve actually got a meal on a flight less than 6 hours – I was totally amazed. The food was pretty good too – hot chicken sandwich, kettle chips, an apple, and a chocolate bar. And the flight was amazing – great take off, smooth, smooth landing.

The flight from Houston to Seattle was also on Continental. After picking up one of our bags, we heard the dreaded, “Will customer Pamela Ormon please come to the Continental desk and speak to a representative.” They’d lost one of our bags, natch. Luckily we’d taken a Park n Fly in Seattle and were going to be staying overnight. They said they could fly it to Vancouver for us, but they promised us it would arrive on the 10:15 am Sunday flight, so we went and slept. It did arrive. So all is good.

We flew four different airlines this trip, and I’d give super high marks to Continental. Usually I book the cheapest fares I can, but I will take Continental if they fly where we’re going, even at higher prices. US Air was cheaper, but wound up being more expensive because they charged a hidden $30 per checked bag fee. Outrageous. We will NOT fly US Air EVER again. I do not like hidden charges.

We picked up Max from the dog sitter –  Max let me know he wasn’t happy to be left out of the vacation! But he forgave me when I gave him a duck jerky treat! LOL And it wasn’t raining when we got home, so that was nice too!

I miss the heat already.

Max is HOME!

Day One for MaxMax is home. It took a little longer than anticipated, because traffic was a nightmare! We were late getting there, and late getting home. But he’s finally here. He was a great dog in the car – just laid down in the backseat and took ‘er easy… when we slowed to a stop, he got up to look, but never made a fuss.

We dropped Pam off at the train, then came on home. I’ve put some food and water out, and he took a drink and ate a little. He’s been sniffing quite a bit at Buck’s favorite spots, but he doesn’t seem to mind a bit that another dog was here.

I gave him a tennis ball, and he actually THROWS it back to you! Now how about that!? He even throws it in the air, and catches it! Man, Buck got the ball and never wanted to give it back! I think Max and I will be playing a lot of ball! (Did I use enough exclamation points in that paragraph??)

Anyway – here’s a picture of him in the house for the first time.

He’s very well behaved. A real charmer… Everywhere I’ve gone, he’s come with me. I think he likes me! :)Maurice
