Dogwood Park, South Surrey

Dogwood ParkToday was a gorgeous day, so Pam and I took a drive down south near the Nico Wynd golf course and took Max to Dogwood Park. It’s a large off leash park, with lots of nice trails though some old growth trees. It’s easily the largest off leash park we’ve been to. The trails are really quite extensive, some even running alongside small bodies of water.

Dogwood ParkThere is a man made lake, with a bridge that dogs can jump off into the water! Not that Max would ever do that! There were no ducks on the lake, so Max didn’t find anyone to chase, today.

There are large fields that lots of dogs were chasing balls and playing frisbee on. The park is a really nice mix of open spaces and wooded areas. We walked around for quite a while, crisscrossing the park, walking through some spectacularly sized redwoods, and other large fir trees.

Max loved it! He chased a few birds, but basically he stays with us while we walk. There were a few gravel paths and he doesn’t really like walking on gravel. I think the stones get caught in his webbed feet and he kinda “spins his tires” to get them out!

Hawthorne Park, North Surrey

Hawthorne ParkAnother beautiful day in Surrey, another chance to visit a new park. Today we decided to visit Hawthorne Park, in North Surrey. The area is currently undergoing a lot of development, with lovely single family homes going in. The area has a magnificent view towards the mountains, which Hawthorne Parkwere gleaming under the midday sun. Mt. Baker was clearly visible to the south.

We had a little problem finding an entrance to the park, as we approached it from the west. There were walking entrances, to be sure, but clearly not the main entrance. As we circled the park we found a small parking lot on the east side, across the street from a local school.

We entered the park and had 3 or 4 large gravel pathways to choose from. We headed south, along side a little brook. There were lots of deciduous trees, so the park seemed a little bare right now. Clearly, it will be Hawthorne Catmarvelous in the summer months. As we strolled along we came across a large pond, covered in ducks! There was a long tree that had fallen into the pond. Sitting on the tree trunk, in the middle of the pond was a cat! Too funny!

Hawthorne GardensWe walked around the very large pond and discovered the main entrance. There was a large children’s play area, with a water park to one side. There was a mini climbing wall, swings, sit and spins – just lots of things for kids to do. There are a couple of covered picnic tables, and lots of open playing fields.

Duck chaser MaxNearby were some formal gardens. Pathways crisscross through beds of daffodils, heather, hyacinth, grape hyacinth and rhododendrons. There are lots of blooming cherry and apple trees, exploding with pale pink flowers. Very pretty walk.

Happy MaxWe crossed a little bridge and Max got his fill of duck chasing again! There were lots of ducks on this pond, and Max actually got his feet wet in this pond! That’s a first! He does love to chase along the water’s edge; I’m not sure what he’d do if one of the ducks refused to leave!

We spent over an hour wandering the pathways that intersect this park. I’m not sure of the size of this park, but it is quite large. We mentioned several times that it will be a good place to jog, since most of the paths are quite flat, wide and well drained.

As we returned to the car, we explored the north side of the park, and found a grove of large redwood trees, and another large brook. It was another great afternoon in the Surrey Parks System! We’ll certainly be coming back to this park for further exploration on another day.

Boundary Park, Surrey

Boundary ParkThe lake at Boundary ParkToday was a glorious sunny spring day and so we piled Max into the car and took off for a new park to explore. We decided on Boundary Park, very close to the Delta Watershed, a park that is in the news lately for a rather depressing sign of the times. I’m not going to talk about that, but just focus on how beautiful this park is!

Max Boundary ParkWe approached it from the “wrong side,” in that we didn’t park at the main entrance, but entered the park from a side street. It is really quite spectacular with large redwoods towering over the many paths. One fallen tree was over twelve feet across! We had visited a park the other day that claimed to have the largest grove of redwoods, but this park surely comes a close second! Very very nice to wander around in this immense grove of trees.

Happy MaxThe park kind of meanders through a neighbourhood of large single family homes, and eventually you come a wonderful little lake. This lake is actually right by the main entrance to the park. It was full of ducks and geese and other waterfowl. Lots of people were wandering around the park, walking their dogs, pushing strollers with their wee gaffers; it was a delightful setting.

Max in Boundary ParkMax really enjoys chasing ducks for some reason, so we let him off his leash and let him charge all over. He’s so funny! He takes off at a gallop, steaming down to the water’s edge, and slams on the brakes! He simply won’t enter the water! Boundary Park LakeFor some reason, every time the ducks rushed away from the Charging Chow, other ducks made a beeline for him, as if to see what the fuss was all about. Or maybe they were coming over to laugh at this silly dog who won’t go in the water!

Goose Boundary ParkThis is another example of a city park that is very well done. Surrey is rightfully proud of it’s many urban parks, and Boundary Park is obviously a well-used, well-cared for park. Max simply loved it. And so did we!

Bear Creek Walk

Flowers in Bear CreekMax and I took a walk through Bear Creek today and it was really gorgeous. It’s so warm here, very unseasonable. It was so warm I had to take off my jacket and walked around in short sleeves.

SniffingThere are so many of these flowers blooming, but I’m not sure what they are. They are on a stem that looks sort of like a peony, but the flowers sort of look like balloon flowers. No idea what they might be, but they are blooming all over Bear Creek. Max was always stopping to smell them; not sure why that was, although he does like to smell flowers, these ones really seemed to attract him.

DucksWe went down by the salmon stream and it was covered in ducks. Max kept trying to get them, but they would quack at him and move off a little. He finally charged them, and they took off in a loud cacophony of honking and quacking! There was a young mother with a couple kids on a bridge, and the ducks came flying over them, and the kids just loved it! It was pretty funny stuff…

Max in Green Timbers

Max in the parkPam has been off the last few days so we’ve been able to go for some nice walks. The weather is so incredible, it’s hard to believe how sunny and warm it is.  Today we went up to Green Timbers park, a large urban forest in the north section of Surrey. It’s a lovely park, with a small lake and lots of walking trails.

Max We trundled about for forty-five minutes. We saw lots of ducks on the lake, which excited Max no end! We chatted with a couple fisherman, but they were having no luck. I’ve been here before and seen people hauling fish out, so it is good for fishing some days.

Max is doing well these days, and he really likes all the walks we’ve been taking lately. The pictures of Max were taken today. He is heading through a big tree that has fallen over, and the stump has left a sort of door through the wood! Thought it was cute.

The North Shore

War memorialPam and I were over on the North Shore today. She had some things to do, so Max and I decided we’d walk around and check out the old haunts. When we first moved to Vancouver 25 years ago, we lived for a number of years on the North Shore. We walked along the tracks by the Lonsdale Quay. There are a number of small statues with park benches beside them, set in tranquil, garden areas.

North Shore parkWe piled in the car and drove by the old apartment we used to live in, and it is a real dump now. The building is run-down, in need of a paint job in the worst way. Lots of pieces of the stucco have fallen off, and it’s overgrown with moss. Kind of sad really…

We moved north, up the mountain to wander around Victoria Park on Keith Road. They have a nice War Memorial, in a well manicured park. Lots of other dogs were out, and Max had a nice time playing with a few little guys.

Max and bearWe walked further north and saw this statue of a Grizzly Bear by Ken Clarke. Max was feeling protective I guess, because he simply would not let this bear alone! He charged around him, barking and acting very silly! People walking on the street stopped to watch him go nuts! haha Hope you enjoy the movie!

Happy New Year!

Happy New YearI can’t believe it’s New Year’s Eve already! The week since Christmas has flown by, so much to do!

2009 was a difficult year for a lot of people, and I hope you all managed to avoid any major negative upheavals.

Max, New Year's Eve, 2009Max has had his health issues this year, but he has managed to recover most of his mobility. The defect is most noticeable on the lino floor in the kitchen, where he can’t make his left front leg brace him, and the paw slips forward. But, as our dog sitter said, he’s a very lovable guy. He is very affectionate and he has a very playful manner. We’re glad to have him around, that’s for sure!

Pam and I have big plans for New Year’s – most involve staying awake til midnight… We both came through the year with our health intact, and we’re grateful for that.

Have a Safe and Fun Time tonight! May all of 2010 be a joy for everyone in your family. And we all wish for peace so our soldiers can come home.
