Spring in Vancouver

Max among the daffodilsThis time of year is so lovely in our neck of the woods. The cherry trees are blooming, the daffodils are everywhere, the tulips are getting ready to bloom… it’s just a great time of year. We’ve been planting some new bulbs, and weeding out the winter sludge. The grape hyacinths have really come along, and they fill the border all along our garden with a profusion of purple!

Max and I took Pam to her appointment and we went for a short walk through Green Timbers Park. It’s about $4.50 to park at the hospital, so that’s why we head over to a park for a short walk while she gets radiated. Today, I managed to get him to sit still and I snapped a few pictures of him sitting among the daffodils. Nice picture I think.

I’ve included a short movie taken the other day at the Serpentine dog off leash park. A lot of the grey Hydro boxes have been painted with a mural on them, with scenes of flowers, woods, and trees. I think they are terrific really. So lo and behold, they’ve painted the garbage bin outside the dog park! We both thought it was cute enough to take a movie of it so you can see it in the full 360 degrees.

End of the month…

January31st.jpgHere we are and January is gone already! Pam and I took Max over to Serpentine off leash park and there were lots of goofy, fun dogs there today. Max was able to get in some serious running with a number of dogs.

This guy in the picture was, without a doubt, the clumsiest dog in the universe. He must have run into me 4 or 5 times. He was hysterical! There was also a little terrier of some kind, a little white guy, kept sticking his head in the puddles. Not to drink, but to get his face all muddy. A most unusual trait.

And you know what – I’m picking the Cards in the Super Bowl today. Hoping the old guy can do it. By old guy I mean Kurt Warner, Arizona Cardinals quarterback, who will be 58 on his birthday. But hey, I will take the points!

Just before…

Max's new friendsJust writing a quick note before the All Star game starts.

Max and I went to the off leash park for a brisk stroll. The weather has finally cleared, after 19 days of fog. So we took full advantage by getting out in the sunshine Max N Friend and enjoying the company of other dogs.

Max is super friendly with other dogs, and he is always scooting off for a big romp with one dog or another! He intercedes when other dogs get out of hand, too, like he’s the cop of the outfit or something. It’s a strange thing to see actually.

He races around with big dogs or little dogs, rough housers, or shy types – he just wants to go for a run! He was really good with people today, even let a few people (women) pet him and touch him without him reacting negatively. A great sign.

Foggy days lately

Max in a bandanaWe’ve been in a fog… and the weather has been crazy too! This year is going to be one for the record books, that’s for sure. First the seemingly endless amounts of snow, and now this crazy fog.

I love the fog, and so does Pam, but we don’t normally get it for such a long time and over such a wide area. I’m going to have to get some shots of the bridges, because you can hardly see them.

Max-Foggy ParkThe one of Max in the fog was taken on Saturday, at Serpentine Off leash park. He’s been a bit restless with all the snow not allowing him to get out and give it a good run, so we’ve been to the offleash a couple times over the last couple of days.

The one of him in his new bandana was taken at the office on Saturday. (I was installing the new server on the weekend – easier to do when no one is around tapping their feet waiting for the databases to get back online.)

He’s doing really well, except for his barking at strangers. I’m convinced it’s because he’s scared, or nervous of them, rather than him trying to be mean. He’s generally pretty good, but still has his moments of barking at strangers.

Here’s a small movie to give you an idea of the thickness of the fog in the park.

Serpentine Off Leash again

Max at Serpentine Off Leash Park Today was a glorious fall day – sunny and warm. After spending some time with the Christmas lights, Max and I headed off to the off leash park. He gets very excited now as we get close. He has an eager little sound that he makes as we take the S-curve into the park. He can hardly contain himself and he lets out one eager bark as we enter the park.

Serpentine ParkAs soon as I release him he’s off and running with who ever will run! As I “do the loop” he stays with me, playing with whoever is around. It’s a smallish park, but lots of space to give them time to get a full head of steam.

It’s situated under wires carrying electricity. The mountains are visible in the distance. And on a nice clear day like today, it seemed like they were barely 30 minutes away! (Oh wait – they are barely 30 minutes away!)

More Off Leash

Serpentine ParkWednesday the 29th we took Max to the same off leash park, Serpentine, but there were not as many dogs there today (we went a bit earlier in the day). So Max got to see a few dogs, but nothing like the pack that was there Tuesday! We decided we would drive over to the second off leash park we knew about in Surrey and it’s on 84th Ave and 154 st. Well!… it is pretty cool, it has a double gated entry so if a dog tried to escape through the gate he would find himself in a smaller penned gated area, so a swell idea to prevent dogs from running away.. but why would they run away from a swell park like that? There were tons of dogs there for Max to play with, and we went through a swell forested area that they have for the dogs (and humans) with a nice path and an easy walk around the park.

Both parks have a water fountain with a dish and the dogs know what that’s for! Unfortunately the city has turned off the water to these fountains (apparently so the pipes won’t burst with the cold weather is what some dog owner told us) but the dogs after racing around like fools all wanted water so we are going to bring some with us next time to dump in the dish for the dogs to share.

Max got quite excited at the park on the second day and was barking at the other dogs to play I guess. He didn’t bark the first day, but was barking the second day and we decided he was getting too excited and while he was playing nice, we didn’t want to encourage the barking like that. So we decided to leave and as soon as we said “ok Max we are going home,” he ran over to the gate to go. Like a good boy. Man alive he’s one swell behaved Dog. I can only thank God and Alicia and Karen and the others that I don’t know their name at the Abbotsford SPCA that they took such good care of our boy until we could find him.

At the Off Leash Park

Today we took Max to the off leash park called the Serpentine. It’s a smallish park, but there are tons of dogs there all out having a good time. All sorts of dog, all sorts of sizes, and he had no issues at all! He just pranced and ran and chased and was chased and had a great time.

Here is a movie of Max, taken by Pam October 28, of him playing at the park.

The “That’s Gross” comment from Pam was about a “little” slobber Max had over his nose! haha About 3 or 4 feet long! haha
