Sunset on Mambo Beach

Mambo #5, with a little bit of Pamela

Fort Beekenburg We’ve been getting late starts, sleeping in a lot, and just getting on island time. We drove over to Caracasbaii, thinking we might jump in at the big tugboat. By the time we got there, we decided to drive around the park surrounding Fort Beekenburg and try and spot some parrots.

Northern crested caracaraParrots we saw, but they wouldn’t sit still long enough for me to focus the camera! But we did manage to get a pretty cool shot of a predator called the Northern crested CaraCara, a type of falcon. We’ve seen them quite a few times, but they are not easy to get to sit still for a photo!

We drove over to Mambo Beach, a rather different looking beach than the last time we were here. They have created a bit of a tourist enclave here, with 10 or 15 restaurants, several shops and a tattoo parlor! It is connected with the Sea Aquarium beach, and the breakwater has been expanded and protects significant sections of the beach. It also provides an amazing habitat for the fish.

Get the butter! There was lots and lots to see, but you’ve seen millions of our pics of all the fish so we’ll just hit you with a couple – the first being a lobster. This guy was pretty much out in the open, a tad unusual – and he waved his “antennae”  to ward me off if I got too close.

Couple of shy guysAnd finally, these two squirrelfish. These guys just seem so lonely to me, and I always feel for them – silly I know, but they just seem soooo shy! I guess it’s the big eyes, a kind of childlike innocence to them.

We found a Van den Tweel’s here – which is our favorite grocery store on Bonaire! It’s a Dutch run company (the name might have given that away…) and the stores are scrupulously clean, with wonderful produce and really interesting cuts of fresh meat and fresh fish. A cool find out near Jan Thiel beach!

  1. The resort was one year old the day before we arrived! It has a few teething pains, but it’s been nice. They’ve tried very hard to make any mistakes right.
