She's a runaway!

Bailey in Green Timbers ParkWell, yesterday we had a jolly good scare. Somehow Bailey got out of the backyard. We were looking at flights for our trek to the Caribbean, and we had put her outside in the back. She was happily chasing birds and squirrels. Around 2:30 or so we went to let her back in and she was gone. Our gate had been broken, the hinges kicked out at the bottom. So at first I thought she had been dognapped. I’d seen her no less than five minutes previously, so figured she couldn’t have gone far.

I ran out front and was calling for her. Lots of kids were wandering around, since the two schools close to our home had let out for the day. She’s so darned friendly, she’d basically go with anyone who paid her the slightest bit of attention.

I came across a fellow walking his dog and when I asked him if he’d seen a golden wandering around he said that he’s seen one with no collar on, off leash, but walking with a young girl! So at least I figured she had not been grabbed, but was out wandering. I jumped in the car and prowled the neighbourhood. No luck.

Lots of our neighbours were sympathetic and promised to keep their eyes open. Some mentioned having seen her. John and Merit jumped in the cars, and on their bikes, to help with the search. So I figured it was looking good for finding her. Pam was beside herself, quite upset.

After two hours of not finding her, or spotting her, I came back to tell Pam to look on craigslist and see if someone had posted a lost and found item. I circled the block one more time.

As I drove up, Pam was waving frantically. When she had gone in the house to check craigslist, there was a flashing light on the phone. It was a message from the Cloverdale Animal Protection Service. Bailey had been turned in to them, and they has scanned her microchip and called!

We quickly rushed over and after paying a small fee, she was back in our arms!

Goofy dog! Big scare, but all is well! And thanks to everyone for helping and caring.

Serpentine Hills

Bailey waitsSerpentine Hills is a new park to Surrey’s extensive park list. It is part of Tynehead Fish Hatchery, but separated by 168th avenue. It is bound to the north by the Trans Canada highway. They have constructed a paved ring path, approximately five kilometres long, that winds around the perimeter of the park. It’s mostly open to the sun, but has some short sections covered by trees. It’s quite scenic, and the path is nice to walk, even in the rain since it’s paved.

So that’s where Bailey and I went for a walk today. It was fun, and she got to meet lots of other dogs. She’s been very good meeting them, including a small Corgi, a big black lab, and a smaller poodle.

Bailey in the poolHere is a short video of Bailey enjoying her first splash into a little kiddie pool we got for her. She just loves being in the water, and leaps in and out then runs around like a fool! Pretty fun to watch. Better than most TV shows.

In Green Timbers

Bailey in Green Timbers ParkToday we took Bailey to Green Timbers Park, in North Surrey. It’s a very large park, with several sections divided by some of the main roads. I really like this one section, north of 100th Avenue. It’s a small section of really cool forest, that is sort of spooky. It’s a very densely packed Bailey Blowsarea, with lots of huge trees, and tons of undergrowth. Lush ferns cover the earth, and moss drips from the trees. There are bridges that span swampy bits, and narrow trails zigzag through the dense foliage.

Bailey had a great time, heading from one side of the trail to the other, checking out the interesting smells. We’re going to have to get a video up of her walking. She’s quite hysterical, running from one side of the trail to the other, searching for the next best smell!

Pam took lots of shots and there are a couple of cute ones. She loves this commercial of a dog with his head out the window, his mouth billowing open. So she got this one of Bailey doing the same thing.

This is a shot I took of Bailey relaxing at home. It seems she’s settling in quite nicely!

Bailey's home…

Bailey First a bit of news – we have decided to change Jenny’s name to Bailey. Neither of us thought that Jenny was much of a dog’s name, so we wanted to change it. It turns out that LAPS had simply named her that, it was not the name she has had all her life, so we figured, what the heck? She’s going to be coming into a new situation, so may as well start her with a new name too.

We’ve also renamed the blog, from All about Max to My Dog’s Blog… Not sure I’m entirely comfortable with that, but All about Max didn’t make much sense.

So, anyway, Saturday we picked up Bailey and brought her home with us. LAPS gave us a big bag of food, a huge metal water bowl (so big it holds a GALLON of water!), and some medicine she needs to take. She’s had surgery to ensure she is spayed, so we also got a cone for her head, which she needs to wear when we can’t supervise her.

Once in the house, she sniffed around quite intently at all the places Max used to hang out, but didn’t feel the need to mark her territory, which is a good sign. She ran around checking out the whole house, but waited to go upstairs until we went up there.

Bailey sleepingShe loved the backyard and gave it a good sniff and run. We played some ball with her, and gave her a toy that is quite hilarious. It’s a rubber pig in a football uniform and squeaks. She loved it. Kept tromping on it with her paw to hear it squeak. She’s been carrying it with her since!

After dinner, we went for a nice long walk around the neighbourhood. She got quite a bit of attention from people, but she took the praise like a champ, and didn’t get a big head about it. So, a good start to things.
