Getting Bailey to fetch

Playing fetch The first step in learning to retrieve beer from the fridge is fetching a ball in a field, of course.

There are setbacks initially though – as this little clip will show! Clearly Bailey thinks it’s my job to do the fetching.

Still, with perseverance we manage to get Bailey started on the path to dog nirvana.

And of course, it’s not a blog post without a picture of a Great Blue Heron right?

Birds on the river

HummingbirdPam and I really enjoy the antics of the birds we see along the Fraser River. We spend a lot of time on our walks checking out the various types of birds. Big and small they always catch our eye!

HummingbirdOn the small side, we’ve seen several hummingbirds, and lots of our neighbours along the walk have hummingbird feeding stations set up. This particular series of photos in this post are of the same bird! See how the color just radically changes…

HummingbirdWhen you see the pictures of him where he is mostly green, it’s hard to see any of the brilliant magenta color that is so prominent in the other two pictures.

Heron with a beer bellyI had to put in another picture of the Great Blue Heron. We see herons every day, and it’s really cool to see them fly. But here, he’s out standing on a log boom, looking for all the world like he has a beer belly! Thought it was hysterical.

The Fraser

Great Heron and ducksEvery morning Bailey and I take a walk along the river. With spring definitely here, there is always something new. Lately it’s been the changing levels of the water: The tides have really been low last few days, but today they are back up high.

Hope you’re not getting sick of seeing the Great Blue Heron! It’s a cool bird to watch, very slow and deliberate moving  while walking in the water.

This video shows the heron taking over the log on which it is pictured in the photo accompanying this story. There are a couple seconds of some of the many other birds in the general area – and note the ducks scrambling to get off the log the heron wants.

On the river

In the morning, Bailey and I take a little walk along the Fraser River. There are lots of ducks, Canada geese, eagles, herons – just what you’d expect along a river near the coast, of course.

Great Blue HeronToday, was very bright, and the river was very calm. Standing on a log, this Great Blue Heron was amazingly well camouflaged. As soon as I turned on the camera, it started to move, and the sun was so bright, I really couldn’t figure out where it was in the view finder. When I got home and viewed the film, I see I managed to capture the bird grabbing breakfast!
