Max update Wed 4:39 am

Max has had a pretty restless night, it’s been difficult as he’s been whining and I am not sure if he’s crying because he’s frustrated and doesn’t know what’s happening or if he’s in pain, he’s relaxed at the moment. I had to get M up to help get Max outside to try to pee as he has not done a thing since his catheter this AM around 9AM, and it’s now 4:40 ish… not good. He’s drinking, we’ve been able to give him a big bowl and  a half of water. He’s eating, and that’s good. He is trying to walk, so his spirits are still good. He stood beside me tonight balancing on his hind leg and leaning on the chair, but the limb with the biggest deficit seems to be his left front paw.. it’s almost contractured looking and we have to keep straightening it out and doing range of motion with him, which we have been doing alot. We are also taking him outside every 2-3 hrs to try to get him to go.. but nothing yet.  🙁   He’s alert and looking around.. he crawled over to where I was sitting and has gone to sleep now.. Maybe he just wanted to be closer to me but I suspected his gaze was at the kitchen and that he wanted more food.. so I gave him more metical canned hypoallergenic… he settled… finally at 4:40 , he settled for a bit.

Maurice and I are not used to looking after a dog that is this seriously ill, and he requires 24/7 watching. We do not want him to injure himself and fall downstairs or into things… it’s really hard to watch him struggle and fall. Hard to try to figure out why he’s crying… I know he’s our fur baby, but it’s really ripping us up to watch him like this. I hope we see some improvement soon. Maurice is going to do the day shift so I am sure he’ll put in a report/update.

hopeful signs: good appetite, drinking water. trying to get up , looking around, now wagging his tail when we come over.

disturbing signs: contracture in left front paw, left sided paralysis, has not pee’d or pooped. 🙁  I think he has a fever…his nose feels hot, as do his ears, and he’s panting. I’ve got fans on and the door open.. and MY hoodie on so I don’t freeze!

We want to thank everyone who has called and emailed us. It means alot to us to have friends and family  like you that care about our boy. Thanks alot everyone. We are clinging to our vet’s advice (Dr Shawn Llewellyn) from Scottsdale Veterinary Hospital) advise to wait and watch and see if he gets his strength back, if the steroids will help him. We want to give him the chance, he’s a great dog and deserves the chance.

Max Update

We heard from the vet a few minutes ago. He said that Max’s blood work was VERY normal, so that’s a very good sign.

He told us that it was early, and we need to give Max some time to heal. We might not see any improvement for a couple days. So, we’re gonna be positive!

Max is very lucid. He is not glassy-eyed or confused or anything like that. He’s wagging his tail now, which he was not doing closer to the event.

He does not seem overly agitated, which I’ve seen in other dogs who are unhealthy. In fact, he’s very calm, and if you looked at him, he appears to be fine, until he tries to move.

He ate his breakfast, so his appetite is still there. All good signs.

Thanks for all the emails guys. We’ve read them to Max and he’s embarrassed about all the fuss! haha

More about Max

We’ve just returned from another vet. We wanted a second opionion from our regular vet. I admire this new vet so much, so much more professional and caring than our other vet. So very thorough…. Such a nice man, and such wonderful helpers he had. But I’m afraid the prognosis is very poor, however.

Max is comfortable, at the moment, but if we move him a certain way, he yelps in pain. He was unable to really recognize us early this morning, and did not react to hearing his name called, but seems more alert now. We’re going to try a round of steriods in an effort to improve muscle control to his left side. Right now, he is unable to move his left side, front or back legs.

We need to see some improvement in his mobility. He can’t just lay on the rug forever. There is some flexibility, and range of motion in his legs, so that is some cause for optimism. But he doesn’t seem able to control them at all.

Overall, it is very heartbreaking.

Alicia – I am very sorry, but I do not think Max will last the week. You need to get in touch with us, soon, if you want to see Max to say goodbye.

About Max

It has been so long since I have made a post, and I really don’t even know how to begin this one.

Last night around 1 am, Max let out a blood-curdling scream. I thought at first it was a person, not Max. We bolted out of bed, to see Max laying on his side, panting heavily. It soon became evident that he was paralyzed on the left side, and unable to stand or even sit up.

We took him to the vet right away, but the vet said there was very little we could do for him. He will either get better, or he won’t. Pretty deep thinking there….

We have brought him home and he does not seem to be in distress, and is resting comfortably. He still cannot get up, and his left legs are useless, and he seems unable to move them.

His tail hasn’t wagged at all, even when I come into the room and pet him. Poor little Maxie! It’s just devastating to think what the future holds! We’re just hoping and praying he will recover some of his mobility. If his front leg would take some weight he could get around I’m sure.

He just has to get some mobility back! Please say a prayer for the little guy.
