Short but sweet

Looking into the valley Well we’re back home again already. Max really seemed to love his time with the other dogs. Anna Marie and Brian have such a wonderful setup, I knew it would be a great tonic for him.

Lots of beautiful lakesThey said he did very well, and ran about the yard with the other dogs. He stumbled once in a while, but he’s doing fine.

The drive to Wenatchee on Highway 2 is very pretty. The pace is very slow compared to the I5 – on the I5, you better be driving 75 or more or they run you over. On highway 2 they drive 60, not 61, or 62… they drive 60. And if you don’t like it, pull over and have a cup of coffee. Cuz there is no takeout – nobody is in such a hurry they can’t stop and have a coffee.

That’s the first time we’ve been to that particular timeshare and it sure won’t be our last!

Daroga State Park

Easy Street Pam and I had a tee off time to play the Desert Canyon Golf course but I had to jam out. I’ve done something to my shoulder and can’t swing the club. Most annoying.

Daroga State ParkWe took a drive down Easy Street  to Daroga State Park. It’s quite a lovely park, nestled at the base of a mountain. Great big swimming hole. A huge ramp for launching boats. It’s a great lake to swim in. We could see lots of fish in the lake. While we were driving up we stopped at a stream and watched the  salmon for awhile. There were some boats full of fisherman out in the lake.

Every corner of usable land in the valley is planted with some kind of fruit tree. The apples are most plentiful, right now, just huge and ripe and delicious. Tons of fruit stands along the way. There are plums and peaches and of course grapes. The hot dry weather is perfect for grapes, and there are wineries a plenty.

Fruit treeLater in the day we came back to the condo and played the 18 hole putting course they have. It’s quite a lot of fun! It’s par 72, with holes that have wonderfully contoured greens. They are like a roller coaster, with huge curves and swales, and if you hit the ball to run with the curves, you can get quite close to the pin. Misread the track, and you’re in trouble!

Pam at CJ's Dinner at CJ’s looking out over the desert was amazing. The sun set as we dined outside in the warm air. The food was really amazing too. CJ’s is the only restaurant near the condo complex, so it was lucky the food was so nice. The crab cakes are really nice. I had prawns and scallops, Pam had the fresh halibut… just a great meal.

Orondo, Washington

On the way to OrondoPam and I have taken a couple days and headed south to one of the timeshares we have. This time we’re about five hours south and east of Vancouver, in Orondo Washington. If you know the area at all, it’s very close to Wenatchee – so that should clear it up for you. 🙂

Desert Canyon GCIt has a lovely links-style golf course, which they tell us is harder than the course in Lynden, which I find hard to believe! When Joy was here, she and Pam and I played in Linden, and we ran out of balls — and we had eight dozen I think…. We’ve got a tee time for 10:30, so we’ll let you know!

It was a nice easy drive here, much easier than going through the mountains to Calgary via the Trans-Canada highway. The highways were in very nice condition, with lots of freshly paved sections. Usually we hit all the paving slow downs, but everything was finished. Very nice driving.

It’s close to 80 here today, so we’re looking forward to that kind of heat tomorrow! The pool and hot tub are just outside the balcony, so you can guess where Pam is right now!

Max has a long walk

Max n M When I got ready to go for a run on Saturday, who should come sit beside me? haha Max seems to eager to come for a run! We did take Max to the Watershed on Saturday, but not for a run! We had lots of comments about how people liked to see Max trucking about, so we did another short movie.

This one is on one of the lower trails. When the movie starts, we’re already about 4 or 5 minutes into the park, after descending a rather steep trail. We have him on a retractable lead, and just let him go at his own pace. Which ever trail he picked, we let him, except the ones I knew were too steep!

As you can see, Max is moving really well. He’s curious about things, and handled meeting other dogs really well. He had had a really long outing,  walked over 45 minutes! So he has stamina too. He even did some slow speed running today too – we just couldn’t hold him back!

We are having a really nice fall. The almanacs say we’re due for a mild winter. Not exactly what the Olympic organizers hoped for I imagine.

Anyway, got your popcorn ready? Enjoy the movie!

Update Sept 19th Max

Well this morning Dr. Shawn from the Scottsdale Veterinary Hospital called to see how Max was doing. It is so great to get this kind of caring and follow up. Max has made steady gains under this Vet’s care. Today we got the order to stop the predisone, so that is great news. We are to watch for any signs that he has worsening of his symptoms, so we will do that.  Max still has some weakness,  but he’s improving.  I want to say a word about the Vet’s. I know I keep gushing about how good they are,  but I believe in  saying when something is wrong and why,  and I certainly believe in saying when something is so very right. To that end:

I feel impelled to just say how totally impressed we are with Shawn and with the entire staff at the Scottsdale Veterinary Hospital. We could not have asked for more friendliness, helpfulness, empathy or support.

It’s been an amazing ride with our Maxie, but we felt good knowing we were the homecare part of the team, and that Shawn was in control of the situation and monitoring max’s progress daily. Night and Day from the other Vets, where we got ” well he’ll either make it or  he won’t”  WHAT?  That’s what you are going to say to someone coming in with the trauma of what happened…we felt like that vet was cold and heartless. NOT so at the Scottsdale. We saw thorough professionalism. We saw caring.

We were outside the door when they did Max’s blood work and catheterization weeping because we could see them calming him and the site of him in the arms of the vet assistant, she was stroking his face and talking to him and had him in her arms.. THAT was the care we were looking for. We knew from the first assessment Shawn did with Max that we had found our new vet. Thank you Shawn and Thank you too to all of the other staff who have called us for frequent  updates about Max, monitoring him, whether it be Shawn, a different Vet (I think they have 5 vets at that hospital) or any of the office staff or vet assistants.

KUDO’s to all of the staff, we certainly appreciate all of your help.

…Pam…

Stephen Harper

A burned out, hollow tree in the Watershed Park.I’m not much of a fan of Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada. I think he’s far too right wing for my tastes. I’m not exactly a raving liberal, but I do think that religious ideology has too much control over his thought processes.

That being said, I do have to give him credit for doing some things right. I received an email with a number of short bon mots which I suspect are not really true. Funny, witty, and interesting, but most likely apocryphal. I think this one is worth relating, because even if it is not true, I do think it is a powerful statement.

In France, at a fairly large conference, Steven Harper was asked by a French cabinet minister if Canadian involvement in Afghanistan was just an example of “empire building”.

He answered by saying, ‘Over the years, Canada has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.’

I suspect this is not true, since Canadian soldiers these days are brought home for burial, but hey, pretty cool anyway.

(Max is doing fine.)

EDITED OCTOBER 02

Ok, I’m going to take myself to task for furthering this incorrect email attribution to Stephen Harper.

I SHOULD HAVE LOOKED IT UP! Would it have been so tough?? I think not. I ALWAYS tell people to go to www.snopes.com before they forward these things. I didn’t. Mea Culpa.

I apologize to everyone.

The quote is NOT ACCURATE and demeans the real intent and spirit in which the answer is given.

The question was posed by the former Archbishop of Canterbury at a World Economic Forum held  in England, and does not contain any mention of empire building, but rather the use of hard and soft force. It was posed to Colin Powell. His answer is much more complex, and involves discussions on WWII too. There is a more complete response here.

His more meaningful answer:

We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works.

Frankly I’m surprised at the answer, since Powell knows that fallen soldiers are returned to America, and have since Vietnam. However, a little hyperbole is forgivable, since the sentiment is so heartfelt.

So don’t believe everything you read on the internet – that’s how the war in Iraq started!

Re-blooming Roses

Vancouver, from Grouse Mtn It’s been a weird year, weather-wise. Summer was late arriving, but we’re hoping that we’ll have a nice Indian Summer (is it still ok to say that??)

The picture of the roses I took this morning. All three rose bushes out front are re-blooming. But this one is kind of cool, since it has so many colors. It’s also very fragrant! Not sure when smell-inet is coming!

Our roses in second bloomMax is very spry today. He actually walked down the steps from upstairs, something he has not even attempted before today. He usually waits at the top of the stairs, one paw in the air, until I carry him downstairs. Not today though – he charged right down the stairs.

He’s definitely getting better! And the more we read about this, the more we’re thinking he’s in the clear. It seems that re-occurences are very rare. So if he can keep going on as he is, by Christmas he’ll have forgotten what happened!

I even think we might be able to run again! (Not that I can at the moment lol – my stupid knee is causing me some problems. It usually “clicks back” in a day or two, but I’ve been limping for nearly a week.)

Hope you are all doing as well as Max!
